Adult Christian Education at All Saints’ includes several Sunday morning classes, the Wednesday evening “Oasis” program, weekday Bible studies, EfM, and occasional special programs. These classes serve as a place for community building as well as Christian education.
Some of these classes use curricula that are designed to be covered over a series of weeks, others over a period of several months. In either case, new members are always invited to participate. If you have any questions, please contact the class leaders. We would love to have you to join us!

A.S.A.P.

Location: Blue Door Room
Facilitators: Kirstie Ivey, tkivey@mac.com, 790-2418, Stacey Morales, staceyemorales@gmail.com, Mary Reed Durkin, maryreeddurkin@gmail.com

This is a new class forming for adults in their mid-thirties and forties who desire to grow in faith and build community. The class will meet on Sunday mornings for study and biblical learning, but will also come together periodically to socialize. Most people in this group have children in elementary or middle school. If you feel too old to be a young adult, but are not ready to be called middle-aged, this class may be exactly what you are looking for.

Community of Young Adults

Location: The Red Door Room
Instructor: The Reverend Jack Alvey, jalvey@allsaintsbirmingham.org, 769-3180

Join the Community of Young Adults as we address several different topics this Spring. We invite Young Adults (20s and 30s) from all stages of life to join our community as we seek to grow in faith learning to articulate and share the Gospel in our daily lives. In addition to lectionary studies, Lenten studies, and video series studies, we will spend 4-5 weeks reading and reflecting on John Rothberg’s The Me I Want to Be. Please let The Rev. Jack Alvey know if you want to order this book, as this portion of the class will begin on January 29th. Feel free to join us at any point during the semester.

This class is required for all adults seeking confirmation in the Episcopal Church, but open to everyone interested in the topic. We will cover a broad range of historical, theological, and liturgical topics to orient you to the faith, history, and mission of our church. There will also be one mid-week instructed Eucharist and dinner (Date to be determined). Adult confirmation is scheduled for June 3 with Bishop Sloan.

Kerygma

(note: this class meets from 8:45-9:45 a.m. )
Location: Journey Room, located in the Undercroft, Room 105
Contact: Dr. David Smith, dsmith@bsc.edu, 328-7820

The Book of Exodus, called the source book of the Bible, initiates great themes of the faith: salvation and revelation, promise and fulfillment, covenant and community. Beginning with the stories of Exodus, participants see that the covenant relationship between God and people echoes throughout the whole Bible. Anchoring us in the testimony of scripture, the study will strengthen and enrich, enliven and inform our faithful living today.

Practicing Our Faith Class

Location: The ground floor “Sunshine Room”, near the atria
Instructors: Gary Weaver, glw14@hotmail.com, Becky Stayner, blstayner@bellsouth.net

The class uses group discussion to determine how to take the faith we learn and profess on Sunday out into our “real world” the rest of the week. These discussions are initiated by the use of a variety of DVD series and/or books by leading religious/spiritual authors and speakers. Past programs include discussion of programs led by Donald Miller (author of Blue Like Jazz), Rob Bell, Phillip Yancey, John Ortberg and Max Lucado, as well as many others. We will begin 2012 viewing the challenges associated with living in poverty, as Becky Stayner leads us in a program based upon the book Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich. Later in the year we will seek how to establish guardrails that keep us from crossing the line between living the full life God wants for us into sinful acts, with the help of Andy Stanley.

The Seekers

Location: The Jackson-Thorpe room, across from the church offices.
Instructor: The Reverend Mike Cleckler, mcleckler@realtysouth.com

We are currently reading and discussing The Gift of Years, by Joan Chittister. In mid-January we will begin a series of DVD talks on “Early Christianities” or some related topic. Please come join us.
